U. S. Specialty Cheese takes top honors again!


Madison, WI (March 23, 2006) – What’s the very best of class cheese in the world?  According to an international panel of 19 expert judges at the 2006 World Championship Cheese Contest, it is GARDEN VEGETABLE GOURMET SPREAD from Mark Laack of U.S. Specialty Cheese, Green Bay, WI. 


A record-breaking win, Mark takes top honors for a second time in three years.  Since 1957 this is the only time a company has won two out of three years.  The World Championship is an annual event held worldwide with even years in Madison, WI.  Companies from 18 countries submitted 1,792 entries making it the largest competition in 49 years. 


The World Championship Cheese Contest is the largest international cheese and butter competition in the world.  Overall, U.S. cheese makers dominated with 27 gold medals out of the total 47 cheese categories judged.  Wisconsin dominated with 17 gold medals!  Other winning countries are Netherlands, Canada, Austria, Australia, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.


U. S. Specialty Cheese’s Garden Vegetable Gourmet Spread was named Best of Class with a score of 99.70 out of a possible 100.  In 2004 U. S. Specialty Cheese won Best of Class with their Double Cranberry 2 Year Old Cheddar Cold Pack.


U. S. Specialty Cheese is located in Green Bay, WI.  Mark Laack is a fifth generation cheese maker with over 25 years of experience.  Mark’s grandfather Harry Laack followed prior generations into the cheese industry.  Mark carried on the tradition when he opened U. S. Specialty Cheese in 2002.  Mark hopes his sons Mason and Mitchell will someday take over the business and carry on the family tradition.


Mark opened U. S. Specialty Cheese with an emphasis on flavorful snack spreads and dips for the retail market.  In 2005 he moved his plant from DePere, WI to a 90,000 square foot plant in Green Bay, WI.   The plant which Mark custom designed, is recognized for it’s innovative and advanced design for the cheese industry. On March 15, 2006 U. S. Specialty Cheese was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the AIB International.
